The Chalenge
In the third season of the popular series Atlanta, one episode takes place in Hungary. However, the entire season, including this episode, was filmed in England. During pre-production, I worked remotely, communicating with the art department’s lead graphic designer via phone and online platforms. The timeline was extremely tight, with only two weeks allocated for the entire graphic preparation and execution of the episode. This included designing both hero graphics and background elements.
One notable challenge was balancing the need for authentic Hungarian visual cues with the show’s modern and stylized aesthetic. Ensuring that these elements felt natural and believable within the episode’s concert and backstage setting required precision and attention to detail.
Bringing the Vision to Life
The episode takes place in a concert venue and its backstage areas, with the director and art department providing a clear vision. They aimed for a contemporary, relaxed style, which we achieved quickly through collaboration and shared references. The concert poster, a central element, became iconic and was finalized within a few feedback rounds.
I was brought on not only for my prior collaboration with the team but also for my local expertise as a Hungary-based designer. My insight helped incorporate authentic details, such as work schedules, handwritten notes, and locally styled hazard signs, grounding the setting in realism.
Remote communication was seamless and highly productive, allowing me to deliver print-ready files while the UK team handled production. Careful planning ensured all graphics were completed on time, with the concert poster receiving particular praise. The lead actor even shared a photo of the poster on social media, helping promote the season. Working with the UK team was a rewarding experience, resulting in high-quality designs that elevated the episode’s visuals.
